Ozempic Face: How Rapid Weight Loss Affects Your Skin

Learn how rapid weight loss from weight-loss drugs like semaglutide can cause sagging skin and a hollow, sunken appearance, and how to counteract these side effects.

At Skin Laundry, we love hearing from our clients and are committed to delivering the skincare solutions you’ve been asking for through new innovations and enhanced services. That’s why we’ve introduced the Power Resurfacing Facial. This powered-up version of our Resurfacing Facial is designed to deliver accelerated, more noticeable improvements for those looking to tackle more stubborn skincare concerns and speed up their skin transformation journey.

As with the Skin Laundry Resurfacing Facial, the Power Resurfacing Facial uses nanofractional radio frequency (RF) technology, which rapidly transfers heat to the skin, stimulating collagen production and creating microchannels that enable greater product absorption. The powered-up version of our classic Resurfacing Facial delivers almost three times the energy.

Like all our Facials, this treatment is safe and effective for all skin tones and treats a host of skin concerns including acne scars and uneven skin texture, dullness, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles and rosacea.

What is Ozempic Face?

“Ozempic face” refers to a set of cosmetic changes that some people experience after using semaglutide, the active ingredient in the medication Ozempic. Originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, Ozempic has also become popular as a weight-loss solution due to its ability to suppress appetite. While many users are thrilled with the results, rapid weight loss can also lead to negative side effects such as loss of skin elasticity, sagging, wrinkles and a hollowed-out appearance.

Ozempic Face is not a medical condition but refers to the facial changes that can accompany rapid weight loss.
Rapid Weight Loss and Its Effects on the Face

Although the term is often linked with Ozempic, the cause of "Ozempic face" is really a result of rapid weight loss. Losing a substantial amount of weight in a short period can cause the skin, particularly on the face, to lose its elasticity and volume. This is because the fat beneath the skin that helps maintain facial contours and structure is diminished.

The skin’s ability to retract or snap back after weight loss also diminishes due to a reduction in collagen and elastin—the proteins responsible for skin firmness and elasticity. This leads to the characteristic sagging, wrinkling, and hollowed-out appearance seen in some Ozempic users.

Dr Roberta Del Campo, Chief Medical Officer at Skin Laundry, explains: “Patients can look much older due to Ozempic face because they lose the collagen and elastin along with the fat pads in the face, which can make them look drawn and much older.”

Common Symptoms of Ozempic Face

• Accelerated signs of aging: The face may develop more noticeable lines and wrinkles.

• Loss of facial fat: This can result in loose, sagging skin.

• A hollowed-out appearance: The cheeks may appear sunken or gaunt.

• Lipodystrophy: A change in how the body stores and distributes fat, which can also affect facial aesthetics.

How to Treat Ozempic Face

“Regaining weight can often reverse facial changes by restoring volume. However, if weight is not regained, there are cosmetic treatments and skincare products that can help restore skin elasticity and improve tone and texture,” says Dr. Del Campo.

“While dermal fillers can address volume loss, my best recommendation is to use energy-based devices that stimulate collagen and elastin production,” she says. “This can firm and lift the skin while also addressing the loss of collagen and elastin due to weight loss.”

Skin Laundry offers a range of energy-based treatments that can effectively address the signs of Ozempic face, restoring skin elasticity and tightening sagging areas by stimulating collagen production and improving overall skin quality.

The Skin Laundry Resurfacing Laser Facial

The Resurfacing Facial uses advanced fractional technology to deliver heat through the skin's surface to the deeper layers using tiny pins. The body’s natural healing mechanism then works to repair these minuscule wounds by increasing the production of fibroblasts. In turn, this increases collagen and elastin production and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

“Both the Skin Laundry Resurfacing and Sculpting Facials can be beneficial for Ozempic face as stimulate collagen production, but combining the two treatments works best” Del Campo says. “The sculpting facial uses Radio Frequency technology to stimulate collagen production in the deeper layers of the dermis, while the Resurfacing Facial offers an immediate firming effect on the upper dermis.”

Skin Laundry’s providers can create customized treatment plans that include both Facials, following a cadence that works best for individual clients’ skin types and concerns.

Adding Fixer, our topical peptide serum, to your Skin Laundry treatment can also help smooth away fine lines by stimulating collagen and elastin production and delivering a smoothing and firming effect.

Skincare and Topical Treatments

Maintaining healthy skin through good skincare habits is also crucial for supporting skin health and resilience. To support collagen production and improve skin elasticity, look for products containing retinoids, vitamin C and peptides, says Del Campo.

Our Vitamin A Serum is formulated with 1% beta-carotene encapsulated Retinol that is activated upon application, increasing skin cell turnover and stimulating collagen synthesis to improve the appearance of fine lines. A blend of four types of Hyaluronic Acid meanwhile works to replenish and maintain hydration while Squalane locks in moisture. Use daily as part of your nighttime skincare routine and be sure to use an SPF 30 daily to prevent further collagen degradation.

Our Vitamin C Serum contains a concentration of 7.5% Vitamin C in the form of Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, a highly stable form of Vitamin C that is less irritating to the skin, while also stimulating collagen production to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve the overall tone and texture of the skin. Use daily as part of your morning skincare routine and follow with moisturizer and an SPF 30 or higher.

Doctor's Note

Drink plenty of water as hydrated skin is much better at keeping its plasticity and pay attention to protein in your diet. Protein helps maintain and build muscle as you lose fat.
